Peikko has a significant role in the EU-funded research project SCHEDULE

A new construction method will be tested by building a replica and comparing the results.

A new Steel Concrete, SC, construction method is aiming to reduce construction schedules by 50% compared to traditional cast-in-situ reinforced concrete, RC, in heavy reinforced structures, like nuclear power plants. The SC method provides a 20% reduction in section thickness compared to RC. It additionally eliminates the need for conventional bar reinforcement or temporary formwork.

The SCHEDULE development project collects practical experiences and real cost data by constructing a pilot building using this new SC construction method. The pilot building will be a replica of the EDF’s diesel generator building for nuclear power plants. The dimensions for the 15-meter-high building will be 24x12 meters. This project is partly funded by the EU and has eight stakeholders from five different European countries:

  • SCI, The Steel Construction Institute (Project Coordinator)
  • EDF, Electricite De France,
  • CEA, Commissariat A L Energie Atomique Et Aux Energies Alternatives
  • EGIS Industries SAS
  • Bouygues Travaux Publics SAS
  • Peikko Lithuania UAB
  • Industeel France
  • Onderzoekscentrum Voor Aanwending Van Staal Nv.

Peikko Lithuania will manufacture all steel components in the project with a total volume of 360 tons. Peikko is also responsible for workshop drawings of the components. The pilot building will be constructed near Paris in France by construction company Bouygues. Pilot project results will be compared to data collected from EDF’s diesel generator building projects executed with the traditional RC method.

“As a forerunner we want to participate in remarkable projects like this, developing new building methods for concrete constructions. SCHEDULE’s planning phase is currently ongoing. Elements will be done in 2020-2021 and construction on site in 2022,” says Raimo Lehtinen, Business Director of Peikko Group Corporation.

SCHEDULE continues the work done in a previous development project called SIENCE where the design rules following the Eurocode format for SC structures were created. Practical solutions for SC construction methods are not limited to nuclear power plants. They can be used in many other reinforced concrete constructions, such as high-rise buildings, bridges, and protection walls.
